Large Kite Flying Tutorial (Setup & Proportional Recommendations)

1. Basic Components

  1. Pilot Kite – Provides the main lift and stability.

  2. Accessory Kites (Decorative Kites) – Add visual impact and help distribute tension.

  3. Main Line – The core load-bearing rope, chosen based on wind speed, kite size, and flying length.

  4. Safety Clip – Allows quick release or connection to prevent accidents.

  5. Ground Anchor – Sandbags, stakes, or vehicles to secure the kite safely.

2. Kite & Line Specifications

  • Kite Size Range: 3.5 m – 40 m

  • Pilot Kite Area Options: 12 / 16 / 22 / 30 / 40 ㎡

  • Main Line Strength: 1000 / 1500 / 2000 / 3000 / 4000 lbs

General Rules:

  • Higher wind speed → stronger line required.

  • Longer flying length → thicker line needed.

  • Larger pilot kite → higher line capacity required.

3. Recommended Proportions

Accessory Kite Combinations

  • 16 ㎡ Pilot Kite

    • Can carry 3–5 accessory kites (3.5 m each)

    • Exact number depends on wind speed and pilot experience

  • 22 ㎡ Pilot Kite

    • Can carry 2–3 accessory kites (20 m each)

    • Reduce the number in strong winds to maintain safe line tension

Skill Level Impact

  • Beginners: Use fewer accessory kites, focus on stability and safety.

  • Experienced Flyers: Can attach more kites for a dramatic group-flight effect.

4. Safety Notes

  • Anchoring: Sandbag weight should be at least 1.5× the kite’s theoretical pull. Strong stakes or vehicle anchoring are also recommended.

  • Wind Conditions: Best operated in medium winds (3–7 m/s). Avoid extreme winds.

  • Team Operation: Large multi-kite setups should be flown with a coordinated team.
